Beneficiary Designations: Check the Forms Outside Your Will
An estate plan can be undermined by an outdated beneficiary form. Review each account’s current designation rather than relying on memory.
Obtain current confirmations
Request or download the actual primary and contingent beneficiary information for insurance, retirement and payable-on-death accounts. Record the institution and date reviewed. An old planning worksheet is not proof of the institution’s current record.
Coordinate family changes
Marriage, divorce, births, deaths and disability can change the intended plan. The legal effect of a life event on a designation varies by asset and governing law. Do not assume a divorce decree or revised will automatically fixes every account.
Consider how the recipient receives property
Naming a minor, a person receiving means-tested benefits or a trust can raise specialized issues. Retirement assets may involve separate tax rules. Have the designation reviewed in the context of the full plan before making a change solely to simplify paperwork.

| Designation | Review question |
|---|---|
| Primary beneficiary | Is this still the intended recipient? |
| Contingent beneficiary | What happens if the primary recipient cannot take? |
A parent updates a will after a child’s birth but leaves an old life-insurance designation unchanged. The insurance may not follow the new will. Check the carrier’s actual record and coordinate it with the broader plan.
What to gather before a consultation

Is naming my estate always the simplest choice?
